Waterdunen creek
A unique nature reserve and recreation area under construction.
Project characteristics
Zeeland Provincial Executive commissioned Martens en Van Oord to carry out preparatory work for one of the final elements in the Waterdunen project, commencing in the autumn of 2018. The work encompasses excavating a creek (c. 50,000 m3 excavation work).
Creek
The creek forms the connection between the Western Scheldt and Waterdunen and joins up with the tide culvert. Fascine mattresses and 20,000 tonnes of riprap are being used to reinforce the creek. The concrete road bridge is being constructed by subcontractor Colijn Beton- en Waterbouw BV/Strukton Civiel. This bridge over the creek will be the future entrance to Waterdunen’s recreational area.
Finishing touches
A lot of work has already been done in the project zone. Most of the zone is already complete. The creek with its road bridge is an important element yet to be completed.
Once this final work is done, it will be possible to put the tide culvert into use to ensure that the nature reserve is subject to tidal influence.
Boost
Waterdunen is a unique nature reserve and recreation area under construction and is situated where the land and sea meet. More recreational homes, a dune campsite, hotel accommodation and a boulevard are to be added. Thus creating an aesthetically appealing tidal zone, both for true nature lovers and for residents and visitors. This area is giving the region a boost!
