Deepening of port in Antwerp

Martens en Van Oord has deepened a port in Antwerp, allowing larger vessels to enter it from now on. The project was part of a long-term plan to deepen the entire Port of Antwerp to the right level.

Project characteristics

  • Specially developed flat grab for separating different soil types.
  • Reuse of sand and sludge.

Use of our expertise

On behalf of the Antwerp Municipal Port Authority, Martens en Van Oord carried out dredging work in the port that provides access to the LPG terminal. MvO was awarded the contract based on the lowest price. A total of 85,000 m3 of soil was dredged up and removed.

Special designed flat clamshell grab

A special designed flat clamshell grab was used for the execution of this project. This grab, which was developed by MvO itself, is highly suitable for efficiently separating various soil types, in this case sand and sludge.

With the flat grab the sludge can be easily dredged first, which is a real feat in equipment development.

The sludge was taken to the Slufter depot at the Rotterdam Maasvlakte; the sand was reused in our other projects.
