Smart dredging with the power of nature: Tiamat
Tiamat – the Smart Dredging Solution for Modern Waterways
At Martens en Van Oord, we believe that innovation only has value when it truly improves real-world operations. Harwich Haven Authority developed a patented concept for which our engineering department designed a practical application: Tiamat. A robust, efficient, and versatile solution for maintenance dredging in ports, estuaries, and offshore environments.
What is Tiamat?
Tiamat is an innovative hydrodynamic dredging system that uses tidal and current forces to re-suspend sediment.
The system is equipped with our proven DOP pumps, which deliver a powerful, reliable, and controlled flow of water and sediment. Thanks to this design, Tiamat is not only effective but also easy to integrate into existing vessels and can be modified wherever necessary. No investment in a new vessel is required.
Proven in practice
In collaboration with Harwich Haven Authority (HHA), Tiamat was extensively tested in 2020 and 2021 and has been part of the annual dredging strategy in the Port of Harwich/Felixstowe since 2022.
The results speak for themselves: lower costs, reduced emissions, and more effective sediment management.
The benefits of Tiamat
- Cost Savings
By halving the number of Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) campaigns, annual maintenance schedules have been significantly shortened — resulting in savings of several tens of percent. - More sustainable and environmentally friendly
Tiamat significantly reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. By using natural currents intelligently, the estuarine system remains better balanced and seabed recovery is supported. - Flexible and adaptable design
Thanks to its modular design and the integration of DOP pumps, Tiamat can be adapted to local conditions. Pumps can be added, repositioned, or replaced to meet specific requirements. - Developed by Dutch engineers
Tiamat was fully developed by our team of engineers, based on the patented concept of Harwich Haven Authority. Drawing on our many years of experience in dredging technology and mechanical engineering, we created a system that combines simplicity with innovation — exactly what the sector needs. And development continues: we are currently exploring ways to further increase Tiamat’s operational efficiency.
Who Is Tiamat Designed For?
- Ports and waterways requiring periodic maintenance
- Estuaries and coastal areas with sufficient tidal range and associated currents
- Environments where ecology and efficiency must go hand in hand
A Future-Proof Choice
The demand for efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective dredging solutions is increasing. With Tiamat, we offer a practical, proven, and sustainable alternative — engineered by our specialists, powered by DOP technology, and tested in one of the UK’s busiest ports: Harwich.
